Before Pride was a celebration, being visible was an act of courage.

LGBTQ+ history did not begin with Stonewall, Pride Month, or the rainbow flag. We have always been here. Building community, challenging expectations, creating culture, demanding respect, and finding ways to live authentically in societies that often refused to acknowledge us.

On August 25, 1845, King Ludwig II of Bavaria was born. His private diaries and correspondence documented his attraction to men. Living during an era when today's LGBTQ+ identities and freedoms did not exist, his story is one of many reminders that queer people have been part of history for generations.

August also carries major significance in trans history. In 1966, Compton's Cafeteria in San Francisco became the site of resistance when transgender women, drag queens, and other members of the queer community stood against ongoing harassment and mistreatment. Their resistance came approximately three years before Stonewall and helped establish an important chapter in America's LGBTQ+ civil rights story.

But knowing our history means recognizing both the wins and the wounds.

Across generations, LGBTQ+ people have faced criminalization, discrimination, violence, rejection, and attempts to erase our existence. Yet our community continued to create, organize, advocate, love, and build.

That's legacy.
